The International Day of the Girl, celebrated annually on October 11th, is a day dedicated to highlighting the unique challenges faced by girls worldwide and advocating for their rights and empowerment. Established by the United Nations in 2011, the day focuses on promoting gender equality and ensuring that girls have access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for a brighter future.
This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of girls’ leadership and the need to support their potential in shaping a more just and equal society. The International Day of the Girl serves as a powerful reminder of the work still to be done to break down barriers and create a world where every girl can thrive and realise her dreams.
Gender equality development is constantly progressing, and 2024 was an especially big celebration. The Paris Olympic Games achieved gender parity for the first time since the modern Olympics began in 1896, assigning quota places equally to men and women.
This has only gone on to influence programmes and projects including the European Week of Judo Values 2024, with the theme “Find Your Balance”. Amongst other elements, there was a focus on gender equality.
Though many federations are greatly supporting the inclusion and development of young women, it is worth looking back to 2023. Azercell Telekom, in collaboration with the Azerbaijan Judo Federation, launched the ‘White Suits Girls!’ project to encourage girls to participate in sports and promote their development. This campaign aims to build self-confidence and combat skills among teenage girls in Azerbaijan while calling for societal support for youth development.
The ‘White Suits Girls!’ initiative encourages girls to prioritise their physical and mental well-being, confidently pursue judo, and represent their country internationally. It also addresses the critical issue of early marriage, relevant both nationally and globally. This is arguably one of the most prominent initiatives and really highlights the issues young women can face and the barriers they must overcome. It is within our power to provide every person with an equal opportunity in sport.
