THE JUDO WORLD MOURNS THE LOSS OF GERHARD JUNGWIRTH, A PILLAR OF AUSTRIAN JUDO

The European Judo Union, alongside the Austrian judo family, mourns the passing of Gerhard Jungwirth. The Salzburger died at the age of 72. As Referee Director, Gerhard has played a major role in shaping the Austrian Judo Federation’s refereeing system over the past decades, ensuring clear and fair conditions at countless tournaments and championships with his calm and objective demeanour.

Gerhard travelled all over Europe from the mid-90s onwards. He was honoured to work at major events such as European Championships, World Cup tournaments (now called European Open), and the European Games of Small States. The training of young referees was especially close to his heart. All currently active international referees from Austria were mentored under his guidance. During his leadership, rule changes were always implemented promptly and effectively. A four-time state champion, Gerhard impressed not only with his deep understanding and expertise in judo but also with his humanity and sincerity.

He embodied the values of judo like few others and became a role model far beyond the borders of his homeland. A devoted family man, Gerhard Jungwirth leaves behind a wife and two children. Referee officer of the Austrian Judo Federation, Gerhard Redl, was deeply affected by the loss of his longtime colleague: “Gerhard unfortunately lost his last fight. Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife Petra, his children and grandchildren. The referee family has lost a great personality and a good friend, but we will always remember Gerhard Jungwirth.”

Dr Martin Poiger, President of the Austrian Judo Federation also expressed his condolences: “With a final Sore Made we say goodbye to an excellent judoka, respected referee, a warm and sincere person. Rest in peace, dear Gerhard.”

The European Judo Union would like to send their heartfelt condolences to Gerhard’s family and friends at this difficult time.
