Safarov: A New Chapter in Judo Begins

Thought the Kids Camp in Budva have concluded, former world-class judoka Orkhan Safarov thoroughly enjoyed being part of it and shared his reflections whilst discussing life after retirement and his journey back to judo, this time, through education and coaching.

Safarov admitted that stepping away from competitive sport was a difficult transition. “When you finish judo, your life changes completely,” he said. “For 25 years, you wake up and go to training. Then one day, you wake up and there’s nothing.” After facing this void, he found his way back through a different path: teaching and learning the educational side of judo. “Now I have a new goal, to understand and share judo beyond just competing.”

He expressed great enthusiasm about being part of the EJU Kids Camp. “When EJU invited me, I was really happy. These kids are the future of our judo family. Maybe two or three of them will become Olympic champions, and maybe they will remember that we met here.” Safarov smiled.

The double world medallist believes it is crucial for young judoka to meet their heroes, especially during events like the European Championships ran alongside the camp. “It is amazing for the kids to see and feel the energy, the spirit of judo live, Montenegro has created a fantastic atmosphere, the support from the crowd was incredible.”

Reflecting on his own childhood, Safarov shared that he once looked up to Japanese legend Tadahiro Nomura and Korean champion Choi Min-ho. In Azerbaijan, his local hero was Elchin Ismayilov, a three-time European champion, who trained at the same club. Today, Safarov coaches children in Azerbaijan, focusing on making judo a joyful experience. “Whether they become champions or not, it is important that kids find happiness in judo. A happy child in sport becomes a healthy, smart adult.”

Safarov is also continuing his own education. He is currently teaching practical judo at Azerbaijan’s Sports Academy and plans to further his studies in sports management and complete the IJF Academy Level 2 coaching course later this year. “Judo gave me everything, now it’s my turn to give something back.”
