The European Judo Union is proud to announce the EJU Ne-waza Trophy 2025, taking place on 3 May 2025, at the Zamet Sports Centre in Rijeka, Croatia. This event invites all athletes who are keen to test their skills explicitly in Ne-waza bouts under the adapted IJF Sport and Organisation Rules (SOR). Competition Format
The EJU Ne-waza Trophy follows the International Judo Federation (IJF) rules, with modifications specific to newaza. These include rules regarding Golden Score, athlete position resets when standing or moving outside the area, and other refinements for a smooth, ground-based contest.
- Contest Duration: 4 minutes (according to IJF SOR).
- Golden Score: In case of a tie at the end of regular time, the match proceeds into Golden Score. A detailed explanation can be found in the official outline.

Women’s Categories:
-48 kg, -52 kg, -57 kg, -63 kg, -70 kg, -78 kg, +78 kg
Men’s Categories:
-60 kg, -66 kg, -73 kg, -81 kg, -90 kg, -100 kg, +100 kg
Competition Etiquette
All contests begin with a display of respect and tradition. Upon the referee’s call, judoka will enter the mat, kneel in Seiza (traditional kneeling posture), and perform a Zarei (kneeling bow) approximately one meter apart. Gripping is not permitted until the referee signals “Hajime” to start the match.
Registration & Eligibility
Who can register?
Entries are open to national federations, national clubs, and individual athletes (with permission from their national federation). There is no limit to the number of participants from a single country in each category.
- All competitors must hold a valid IJF card (Veteran/Kata or International).
- Registration Deadline: April 18, 2025, at 23:59 CET via Judobase.
- Fee: €80 (non-refundable)
