NAZARENKO TAKES GOLD, FRENCH DREAMS DASHED

The J2 -90 kg category was one of the day’s most anticipated events, with Helios Latchoumanaya (FRA) seen as France’s top hope for a gold medal. Latchoumanaya thrilled the home crowd early on, defeating Lasha Kizilashvili (GEO) in his opening bout and then triumphing over Marcelo Adriano De Azevedo Casanova (BRA) amid cheers from the packed stadium.

Having secured his spot in the final, Latchoumanaya awaited his opponent. Would it be the second seed, Davurkhon Karomatov (UZB), or someone else? The answer came swiftly on the tatami, as Oleksandr Nazarenko (UKR) emerged as his final opponent, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown.

Nazarenko struck first in the final, scoring a waza-ari on the edge of the mat. Each attack from Latchoumanaya drew roars from the stands but Nazarenko’s tactical play kept him ahead. Despite being penalized twice, Nazarenko maintained his composure under pressure. Latchoumanaya pushed relentlessly, launching strong attacks, woefully they lacked the precision needed to turn the tide. As the final gong signalled the end of their contest, Nazarenko remained one waza-ari ahead, sealing the victory and taking the gold for Ukraine, leaving Latchoumanaya and the French crowd thwarted.

This marks the end of the judo competition at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, bringing an exciting chapter of intense battles, remarkable performances and unforgettable moments to a close. Over three days, athletes from around the world showcased their skill, determination and sportsmanship on the tatami, leaving fans inspired and spectators thrilled. From dramatic upsets to heroic comebacks, the event celebrated the spirit of Paralympic judo and the incredible journeys of the competitors.
