MEETING OF CULTURES AND VALUES

European Week of Judo Values 2024

MEETING OF CULTURES AND VALUES

The European Week of Judo Values (EWJV) 2024, under the theme “Find Your Balance”, highlights the importance of balance in two fundamental ways: in the physical practice of judo and in the promotion of gender equality in sport. This event that takes place at the same time as the European Week of Sports not only emphasises physical activity but also the core values of judo, such as respect, discipline and inclusion. In this search for balance, we are led to reflect: how can we apply these principles in our daily lives and contribute to a fairer and more equal environment?

Recently, Cologne, Germany, hosted the Judo & Fun Camp 2024, which marked the start of the EWJV. This non-competitive event brought together judoka from various nationalities, including Portugal, Brazil, Iceland, Estonia and Italy. With an educational and recreational approach, led by top athletes such as Alexander Gabler and Nuno Delgado, participants had the opportunity to explore not only their judo knowledge but also the city’s rich cultural activities.

During Judo & Fun Camp 2024, Nuno Delgado brought even more energy to the event by introducing the JWalk. Inspired by CWalk, JWalk is a dance that combines Judo movements with music, to the sound of Dr. Dre. This innovation not only added a fun element to the warm-up but also promoted creativity and coordination among all participants. The JWalk, with its dynamic choreography, invites athletes to express themselves freely while improving their technique, enriching the practice of judo and offering a platform for each judoka to find their own rhythm.

To encourage participation and team spirit, Delgado organised a “battle” between groups of participants where each team presented its version of the JWalk. This activity not only reinforced the values of cooperation and friendship but also brought an atmosphere of relaxation and joy to the camp. The event demonstrates that competition, when guided by fun and unity, can transform relationships between athletes, stressing that judo goes beyond the tatami.

The spirit of the Judo & Fun Camp is a perfect reflection of the “Find Your Balance” theme. By promoting friendship and inclusion, the event underlined the importance of balance in life and sport. In an environment free from competitive pressure, the camp revealed how judo can be a powerful tool for strengthening social connections and developing essential life skills. As we consider these experiences, how can we ensure that judo continues to be a platform that promotes positive values and inclusion at all levels? Delgado explained;

“As the EWJV moves forward, various actions and initiatives are taking place, reinforcing the message that judo is a philosophy that teaches the importance of balance shaping not only athletes but also more aware and supportive citizens. After all, every step we take in judo is a reflection of our personal journey and the relationships we cultivate.”
