Lignano Gears Up to Welcome More Than 500 Athletes This Weekend

More than 500 athletes from 29 countries are getting ready to step onto the tatami for the Junior European Cup in Lignano Sabbiadoro. Commenting on the great turnout is Event Manager, Gianluigi PUGNETTI,

The attendance trend is more than positive, the numbers are approaching pre-Covid records, and we are very pleased about that. We expect to see high-level judo. A heartfelt thank-you goes to all the volunteers who make the organization of this event possible year after year.

The ambassador for this edition will be Olympic athlete Asya TAVANO, a native of Friuli Venezia Giulia who currently competes with the Fiamme Azzurre sports group. Her track record includes participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, two individual medals at the senior European Championships, and five medals in Grand Slam and Grand Prix competitions, including one gold. In Lignano, Tavano placed second in 2021 and came back to win in 2022.

The largest delegations after Italy are: Hungary with 40 athletes, followed by Austria with 39 and Spain with 36.

Looking to repeat last year’s victories are Morgane ANNIS (FRA) in the -48kg category, Michela TERRANOVA (ITA) in the -57kg category, along with Gaia STELLA (ITA), who won the 2023 edition and placed fifth last year, and finally, in the +78kg category, Marcelina VRANJES (CRO). No male athlete competing this year has won a past edition.

Representing the organizing club will be Daniel CLOCCHIATTI (ITA).

The competition is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 09:00 (CET) with the women’s -63kg, -70kg, -78kg, and +78kg categories, and the men’s -60kg, -66kg, and -73kg categories.

Now, it’s time to let the tatami do the talking. Hajime!
