On the first day of the Podgorica Senior European Judo Cup 2024, Montenegrin judo saw a historic moment when Jusuf NURKOVIC secured a silver medal in the men’s -66kg category. This remarkable achievement is one of the best results for Montenegrin judo to date and it further cements the Nurkovic family’s deep-rooted passion for the sport.
The family trains at Judo Club IBAR, nestled in the northern city of Rožaje. Jusuf, however, was not the only family member on the mat today. His younger brother, Jahja, also competed, participating in the fiercely competitive -73kg category, where he found himself in what can only be described as a “pool of death,” surrounded by top judoka. Although Jahja didn’t reach the podium this time, the family’s presence at the competition was undeniable. With seven siblings in total, the support was palpable, with the entire clan backing Jusuf and Jahja.
For Jusuf, the day was nothing short of a career highlight. He progressed confidently through each round, securing his place in the final. Was taking home a medal always in the cards?
“Yes, I expected it because I trained really hard for this, and I knew I could do it,” – Jusuf said. “My coach believed in me, and my team believed in me. Deep down, I knew I could achieve this result. I felt good in the final, I was ready. But in judo, one small mistake can cost you the fight. I hope to overcome that next time.”
Reflecting on the day’s results, Jusuf also acknowledged the support he received from both his brother and the crowd. “The icing on the cake would have been if my brother had won a medal too. But it was amazing; the crowd supported us so much. I’m happy to have won the first medal for our team. It’s a great experience and I want to thank my coach and judo club for all their support. I hope to do just as well next year at the Senior European Championships.”
Jusuf has had an exceptional year, building on his success with another silver medal at the Tallinn European Open. Quietly, he admits that his real goal is to win a senior European medal next year when the championships will be held on home soil, in Podgorica.
The Nurkovic family’s commitment to judo is all encompassing. For them, judo is more than a sport; it’s a way of life. If they could rewrite their birth certificates, “Judo” would undoubtedly be their middle name. This family lives, breathes, and thrives in the world of judo, and with their talent and dedication, they are sure to make an even greater mark on the international stage.
