It is with great sadness that the Swiss Judo & Ju-Jitsu Association has learned of the passing of Eric Hänni. As his wife Lotty shared, Eric passed away on 25 December, at the age of 86. His death marks the end of an extraordinary life deeply intertwined with the history of Swiss judo.
Born on 19 December 1938, Eric Hänni discovered his passion for judo early in life. With immense talent and tireless dedication, he became one of the defining figures of Swiss judo. His silver medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the first Olympic Games to include judo, remains a historic achievement. It was not only Switzerland’s first-ever medal in judo but also a symbol of his pursuit of excellence. That same year, Eric added a bronze medal at the European Championships, cementing his place as a world-class judoka.
Eric was admired for his warm personality, humour, and deep connections with those around him. He wasn’t just an athlete; he was a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration. Even after retiring from active competition, Eric remained a steadfast advocate for judo. As an honorary member of the Swiss Judo & Ju-Jitsu Association, he regularly attended delegate meetings, led training courses, and served as a Dan expert and international referee. His presence enriched countless events, including the National Judo & Ju-Jitsu Days, where he generously shared his knowledge and passion.
In recognition of his lifelong dedication, Eric Hänni was honored with the ninth Dan, one of the highest distinctions in the sport. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Swiss judo, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Eric was a reference for all Swiss judoka, a pioneer as the first Swiss judoka winning an Olympic silver medal. He showed the way and stayed interested in the evolution of our sport until the end of his life. Eric’s passion for judo went far beyond the competition mat, it extended to nurturing the next generation of judoka, always encouraging them to strive for greatness. His wisdom, kindness, and commitment left a profound impact on everyone who had the privilege to know him. Whether through his technical advice, his warm words of encouragement, or his infectious enthusiasm, Eric shaped countless lives in the judo community. We will miss him deeply, but his spirit will forever remain a part of Swiss judo.
The European Judo Union would also like to express their condolences, sending heartfelt sympathy to Eric’s family and friends during this difficult time. The Swiss Judo & Ju-Jitsu Association will honor Eric Hänni’s memory and ensure his contributions are never forgotten. A comprehensive tribute to his extraordinary life and career will follow. Rest in peace, Eric Hänni, a true pioneer, a gentleman, and a legend of Swiss judo.
