"I WOULDN'T CHANGE THIS MOMENT FOR ANY GOLD MEDAL".

Podgorica Senior European Cup 2024

"I WOULDN'T CHANGE THIS MOMENT FOR ANY GOLD MEDAL".

It’s a rare sight to witness three siblings competing simultaneously at the same event at the same time! Yet, the second day of the Podgorica Senior European Cup 2024 delivered just that. The Gardasevic trio—Tamara GARDASEVIC (-57kg), Nebojša GARDASEVIC (-81kg), and Nikola GARDASEVIC (-81kg), were all in action during the preliminary rounds, with the two brothers ultimately standing side by side on the podium, both claiming bronze in the -81kg category.

Nikola expressed his pride and joy first about the unique experience of sharing the podium with his brother. “The feeling of competing with my siblings in the same event, especially at a European Cup, is a big deal,” – Nikola shared. “To fight for a medal is huge, and although I regret not making the final, if I had to choose between a gold medal contest or standing with my brother on the podium, I would choose today’s outcome over and over again. I am very proud and happy for Nebojša, as this is his first European Cup medal, and I am sure our sister will be on the podium in upcoming tournaments.”

Nebojša, who had to visit the medical team twice before winning his bronze medal contest, echoed the sentiment, reflecting on the significance of the moment. “I have stood on the podium with my brother before but achieving this outcome at a European Cup is special, especially because we did it in our own country,” – Nebojša said. “Of course, a gold and silver scenario would have been great, but sharing this moment with my brother is unforgettable.” Nebojša continues as he speaks about his medical challenges during the contest, acknowledging the crucial role of the medical team in his ability to continue competing. “I was worried I might have to withdraw from the fight but thanks to the medical team, they did their job very well, and I am grateful. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to finish my fight.”

Both brothers have their eyes on making the Montenegrin national team for the upcoming Senior European Championships held in Podgorica next April. The -81kg division is highly competitive, with standout judoka like Marko GUSIC, who finished 5th at the Senior Europeans in 2018 and comes with a wealth of international experience. When asked if either Nebojša or Nikola had considered moving up a weight class, both were quick to respond. “No,” – they answered in unison, determined to compete in the -81kg division. “We will battle it out within -81kg because that is where we belong.”

As for their future, the brothers are focusing on working hard towards their goals and for a moment they will enjoy celebrating their success with their family, who have been their biggest supporters throughout their journey.

“We are very thankful for our family for all their support; they are always there for us,” – Nikola concluded. “And lastly, I want to mention my son, who was here today and saw me compete for the first time in an international event. He is my biggest fan and my motivation.”
