It is with great sadness we inform you that on the 5 March 2023, Hungarian judo legend, Dr Hetényi Antal, passed away. Dr Hetényi was the first ever Hungarian judoka to place at the Olympic Games, precisely finishing 5th place at Munich 1972. Markedly, he claimed the judoka of the year title in the same year.
Dr Hetényi was the leader of one of the most prestigious Hungarian judo clubs, located in the capital city of Budapest, called the KSI SE. He celebrated his 75th birthday last October.
In 2020, he received his 8th Dan which was signed by the president of the International Judo Federation, Marius Vizer. Dr Hetényi’s exemplary work ethic and humanity was recognised by many.
At home, the judo community referred to him with his nickname, Tozsó and the youngsters would simply call out for him as uncle Tozsó. The Hungarian Judo Association mourns an incredible member of their community.
Condolences from President Dr. TÓTH László and European Judo Union to the family and friends of Dr Hetényi Antal.
