For the first time, the European Judo Union (EJU) Kata Tour made a stop in Maintal, Germany, where the German Judo Federation organised a highly successful tournament. Seventy pairs from 13 countries participated, showcasing the growing interest in kata across Europe. According to Dr. Slavisa Bradic, EJU Head Kata Commissioner, the turnout was impressive for a debut event, particularly with the influx of young, fresh talent entering the competitive kata scene.
Despite the absence of some big names, the competition proved to be of excellent quality. Many of the new, younger competitors demonstrated remarkable technical skill, bringing a sense of excitement and renewal to the sport. The participation of athletes from smaller nations, especially in the junior categories, further highlighted the growing reach of kata competitions across Europe.
For several countries, this tournament was more than just a competition; it served as a critical preparation for the upcoming World Judo Championships Kata in Las Vegas 2024, where European competitors are traditionally expected to dominate.
In addition to the competition itself, the tournament featured a seminar led by the EJU Kata Commission. This seminar was aimed at both established and aspiring kata judges, with an examination held to certify new officials. The event saw several new judges join the ranks, expanding the EJU’s kata judging family. Dr. Bradic emphasised the EJU’s ongoing commitment to improving the standards of kata judging and revising the rules of kata competitions to keep the sport progressing.
As the event concluded, all competing pairs returned home to fine-tune their kata routines for Las Vegas. With the European kata community growing stronger and more dynamic, anticipation is high for the World Judo Championships Kata 2024, where these newly emerging talents will have a chance to shine on the global stage.
