The opening ceremony of the Podgorica Senior European Cup 2024 highlighted the remarkable growth and efforts of the Montenegrin Judo Federation, which has now hosted two European Cups in just six months. The key focus of the event was preparing for next year’s major judo spectacle, the European Judo Championships Seniors 2025, set to take place in Podgorica, Montenegro.
Mr. Jovica REČEVIĆ, President of the National Judo Federation of Montenegro, addressed the audience first, expressing pride in the country’s ability to host international events.
“Montenegro, for the second time in just half a year, is hosting a significant international competition. After successfully organising the Junior European Cup at this very same venue in March, we now host the Senior European Cup. This weekend is the general rehearsal for Montenegro to host the European Judo Championships Senior 2025, which awaits us in April next year. We have been preparing for months to meet this challenge and to showcase Montenegro on the European and world judo map. 2024 has been a year of full affirmation for our country as a judo destination for significant competitions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the European Judo Union for their trust in us, especially EJU President Dr. Toth László.”
EJU Vice President Mrs. Catarina RODRIGUES echoed Rečević’s sentiments and expressed confidence in Montenegro’s ability to host the 2025 European Championships successfully.
“The EJU trusts the organising capacity of the Montenegrin Judo Federation’s team and is confident that the 2025 Senior European Championship will be a success. I would also like to congratulate the Local Organisation team for their excellent preparation and positive attitude. A special thank you to the Minister of Sports of Montenegro and all our dedicated sponsors for supporting our sport. I wish all the athletes, coaches, and officials the best of luck for the remainder of the event.”
Finally, Mr. Zoran JOJIC, Director of the Sports Directorate at the Ministry of Sports of Montenegro, emphasised the broader significance of judo both for the country and for personal development.
“It is an honour to welcome you all on behalf of the Ministry of Sport and Youth. The presence of participants from numerous countries reflects the importance of this competition for both Montenegro and the sport of judo. Judo is more than physical strength, it teaches discipline, patience, and respect. This weekend’s competition is a prelude to an even greater event, the Senior European Championships 2025. We are excited to showcase that Montenegro can host major sports events at the highest level, and I am confident Podgorica will become a true capital of judo sports.”
The Podgorica Senior European Cup 2024 not only celebrates the dedication of Montenegrin judo but also marks a milestone for the sport in the country, with the spotlight firmly set on next year’s European Judo Championships Senior 2025.
