Andrew MALONE (GBR) fought today in the M2 -73kg category. For MALONE, judo is a family affair and trained as a child, his father his coach. He has been training with Olympians since he was young, attending the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 as a training partner for David SOMMERVILLE (GBR). Malone was able to see what the ‘best of the best’ looked like and is doing a fantastic job training future hopefuls in his own club. His passion is evident in his coaching, last year taking a group of cadet and junior athletes to Tokyo as part of the GB Futures programme. When speaking to the judoka about his huge involvement in the sport he tells us,
“I’ve been coaching for twelve years now, training with my players keeps me in the state I am, with a lot of extra conditioning added in. It makes me a better coach and we’re now reaping the rewards with players going to Cadet Europeans and European Youth Olympics.”
MALONE feels that his physical abilities assisted him on his way to glory in this tournament. Although it was a tough day and his semi final was close, he is happy to have been tested to his limits, making this gold all the more rewarding.
Renicks Returns To Glasgow
“I have refereed in the Olympic Games in Athens, 2004 and the Paralympic Games in Sydney, 2000, I would say that the Paralympics were my favourite.”
JOHANSSON had much involvement with his national team prior to refereeing, so actually attained his license a little later on. His favourite memory in judo was as the Swedish national coach during a major event, his team taking away three medals, and remembering that the former East Germany walked away with only one. A proud national moment!

The eventual gold medallist, COX, represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games held in Athens, 2004 and again in London, 2012. The GBR judoka also won silver medals in the 2004 and 2005 European Judo Championships in Romania and the latter in the Netherlands. Later in 2011, COX took a bronze in the European Judo Championships held in Turkey.
It is never truly goodbye…
This will be Carlos DUARTE (POR) and Dick JOHANSSON’s (SWE) final tournament at this level. Duarte has had a fantastic career within judo and when asking which event was his most memorable, he tells us,

The home crowd erupted as Louise RENICKS (GBR) entered her final contest against fellow GBR judoka, Sophie COX in the F2 -57kg category. Scotland-born RENICKS had the support of her local judo club, who certainly created an electric atmosphere. However, after a strong day of competition defeating her opponents convincingly, she couldn’t quite manage to secure a win in the final as it went in to golden score.
Though her coach Stephanie INGLIS, former international, was forced to take early retirement from competitive judo after a traumatic incident, nothing could keep her away from the Emirates Arena today. Both women last competed together in Glasgow in the Commonwealth Games 2014, RENICKS taking gold and INGLIS a silver for the Scottish team, so it seemed fitting that the duo came out of the tunnel together.
