PRESIDENT DR TOTH ENGAGES IN STRATEGIC DIALOGUE AT AJU'S GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Dr. TOTH Laszlo, President of the European Judo Union was one of the distinguished guests at the General Assembly of the African Judo Union (AJU), held during past days in Casablanca, Morocco. His presence reinforced the EJU’s commitment to global collaboration and the strategic advancement of judo. The event convened key stakeholders to discuss critical priorities, including youth engagement and international partnership opportunities from grassroots to elite level.

Dr. Toth highlighted the EJU’s innovative programs, emphasising shared values of discipline and respect, while exploring synergies with the African Judo Union. Discussions centred on joint initiatives such as talent development, resource sharing and cross-continental events to expand judo’s reach and impact. President Dr Toth further explained in details:

“First of all, it was a very special opportunity to attend the African Judo Union’s General Assembly, where the current leaders were re-elected. We are delighted to continue working collaboratively with them. I also had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Carlos Zegarra, President of the Pan-American Judo Union, and we will further strengthen our collaboration with the Pan-American region.

Focusing back on the African Judo Union (AJU), its President, Mr. Randrianasolo-Niaiko, and the executive committee agreed on several objectives, many of which include joint plans in both the sports and education sectors. One of these initiatives involves expending the Champions League at the end of this year in Belgrade, with teams from other continents invited to participate. Additionally, Africa will host its own Champions League in Egypt this year, potentially presenting an opportunity for podium-finishing teams from Montpellier 2024 to attend.

Further development plans include creating opportunities for African judoka to compete in top European competitions. Moving forward, we can expect an increased number of overseas competitors at our Veteran and Kata European Cups, as well as the U15 Hopes Cups. Our prestigious Kids Camp, held during the Senior European Championships in Montenegro, will also welcome up to 30 children from the AJU. Finally, preparations are underway to enhance collaboration in refereeing between the two continents.

A key element in all of these initiatives will be designing a comprehensive package plan to allow teams to remain in Europe for consecutive events and training opportunities, not only for potential Olympians but also at the grassroots level. Work is ongoing to finalise this plan.

Once again, I am deeply grateful for the invitation to the AJU’s General Assembly, where I had the privilege of experiencing the strength and unity of our judo family.”

During the assembly, it was also officially announced that Africa will keep organising major international events including the 2026 Cadet World Championships in Senegal and the 2025 Veterans World Championships in Madagascar. By strengthening ties with the AJU, the EJU aims to foster sustainable growth, enhance competitive standards, and solidify its leadership role in the global judo community.
