EUROPE GOES HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH JAPAN FOR GOLD

The Las Vegas World Judo Championships Kata 2024 have concluded, celebrating new world champions across eight categories. Raul CAMACHO, the IJF Kata Sport Director, reflects on the event and highlights a key aspect of kata competitions: the judges’ role. A seasoned competitor himself, Camacho is a triple world medalist in kata, two silver and one bronze, and brings extensive experience from both sides of the mat.

First of all I must emphasise that the level is better every year. We have seen very great performances here in Las Vegas. It must also be said that we are very happy to see new countries interested in kata like Azerbaijan, Vietnam or Luxembourg. This is very important because it shows that the work we have done for years is paying off. We want to spread kata as widely as possible, not just in their competitive aspect but above all because they are an integral part of judo.

The work of the judges is crucial in a discipline like kata. Everything depends on their knowledge, their professionalism and their integrity. The system is simple, clear and known to all. It works very well and allows us to designate the best pairs. This is what we did here in Las Vegas with great success.

Europe faced off against Japan, and in the end, the two shared the eight gold medals up for grabs. Europe celebrated four triumphant wins, accompanied by numerous silver and bronze memories.
