Despite a lower-than-expected turnout of attendees at this weekend’s Portimão senior European Judo Cup, the event promises to deliver thrilling judo action from 131 judoka across 17 nations, with Paris 2024 Olympians gracing the tatami, all in pursuit of regaining form ahead of next year’s big events.
The host nation will see an exciting array of athletes, from emerging cadet European champions to seasoned Olympians, offering a mix of youth and experience. Among those leading the charge for Portugal will be: Joana Crisóstomo (-70kg), Anri Egutidze (-81kg), Raquel Brito (-52kg), Maria Silveira (-57kg), Catarina Costa (-52kg).
From across the Atlantic, Jack Yonezuka (USA) continues his European judo journey, coming into the tournament as the top seed in the -73kg category. Yonezuka’s consistent effort this year has solidified his position as a competitor to watch and this weekend will be no different. Similarly, fellow American Sara Golden (USA) will lead the charge in the -63kg category, bringing her A-game to European soil. Also in the spotlight is Mohab Elnahas (CAN), the eldest of the famous Elnahas family, who will take centre stage in the -90kg division.
The senior European Judo Cup series plays a vital role in the development of all, cadet, junior and senior judoka, offering crucial competitive experience, ranking points, and exposure on the international stage. Beyond individual performances, these tournaments serve as key preparation opportunities for larger events, including the U23 European Championships, where the European ranking system determines the seeding.
While the Portimão European Judo Cup may have fewer arrivals than anticipated, the action promises to be anything but low-key. With athletes of this caliber on the mat, spectators, whether live or virtual, are in for a judo showcase filled with skill, intensity, and passion. Follow all the live action on judotv.com .
