SASSI MERITS OF LOMBARDO AND BEKAURI

Italian judoka Thomas SASSI continues to make waves in the judo world, recently adding a bronze medal from the 2024 Cadet World Judo Championships to his growing list of achievements. However, this weekend, the junior national vice-champion of Italy took on a new challenge, testing his skills in the senior ranks at the Podgorica European Cup.

Sassi’s trip to Montenegro wasn’t just about winning, it was about growth. “At cadet events, there is always pressure and expectations,” Sassi explained. “Here, I came to enjoy myself and to start thinking differently. I am in my last year as a cadet, so sooner or later I will have to adjust to the junior and senior style.”

But did he really come just to enjoy the experience? “Yes, I came to enjoy judo but of course, with a medal, I will enjoy it even more,” – he laughs.

Throughout the preliminary rounds, Sassi showcased his shime-waza skills, earning him quick victories on the mat. When asked if this was his specialty, he replied, “Yes, I am specialised in this shime-waza. I learned it from Manuel Lombardo, the best.” He went on to add, “I am quite confident in ne-waza overall.”

While Manuel Lombardo serves as his primary Italian role model, Sassi admits to a deep admiration for Lasha Bekauri, the Georgian double Olympic champion. “I even have his photo as my screensaver,” he reveals. Why Bekauri? “Because he acts and delivers like a champion,” says the 17-year-old judoka.

Sassi’s foray into the senior category ended with a 5th place as he suffered a defeat from Egilsten AMARASEKARA (NOR) in their bronze medal bout. Regardless of the outcome, Sassi enjoyed this experience and look ahead to an exciting future in judo.
