The European University Games 2024 in Miskolc, Hungary, saw a competitive field with 18 countries winning at least one medal. Georgia topped the medals table with a total of 4 gold and 1 bronze. The hosts followed closely with 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals. Right behind them was the Dutch team with a total of 1-3-6. The team spirit was palpable in the University Sports Hall.
Silver medallist in the -48kg category, Jana Cid Balcells from the University of Pompeu Fabra (ESP), spoke to EUSA after the final;
Yeah, I’m really excited because the last month hasn’t been very good, with injuries and everything. So it is very reassuring to get this medal.
The three-day event consisted of two days of individual competition and one day of mixed team event. The latter ended with a great atmosphere where team spirit and fair play were abundant in the field of play. Sumy State University (UKR) won the mixed team event, dominating the whole day of competition. The silver medal went to Windesheim University of Applied Sciences (NED). The bronze medals were earned by the University of Orleans (FRA) and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (ROU).
The official opening ceremony of the European Universities Games 2024 took place on 12th July at the DVTK Arena in Miskolc in the presence of representatives of the highest authorities of the host country, the University of Miskolc, the University of Debrecen, the City of Miskolc, the Hungarian University Sports Federation (MEFS), the European University Sports Association (EUSA), VIPs, officials, athletes and citizens of Miskolc.
