National federations in most countries, if not all, relies on government funding which is given based on results mostly from European, world and Olympic championships. Therefore, the European Judo Championships Seniors Zagreb 2024, will not only offer the winner 700 world ranking points but potential personal, as well as team support for the forthcoming years.
Government funding plays a crucial role in promoting widespread participation in judo. By allocating resources to judo clubs, facilities, and training programs, governments enable individuals from all backgrounds to access and engage in the sport. This funding helps in providing affordable training opportunities, coaching, and equipment, thus breaking down financial barriers and ensuring equal opportunities for aspiring judoka. Some countries also have several private foundations to extend the support for the elite. These resources are essential for athletes to reach their full potential and compete at national and international levels. However, in most countries, a medal from the Europeans isn’t enough to meet the criteria, only winning the title is.
At the last Olympic Games, 16 European nations won at least one Olympic medal. One might instantly think, these countries then must have won a bag full of European titles on route to Paris 2024. Not quite, four of them did not: Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the now Individual Neutral Athletes. Still, it can all change in Zagreb though. Same goes for the host nation who narrowly missed out on a medal at the Tokyo Summer Games and their last European title dates back to 1974, therefore, a successful event in Zagreb could potentially open a new chapter in their history books. The Croatian Judo Federation has excelled at organising several international events at different calibre.
