EJU President László TOTH and local organiser Joaquim Sergio PINA, President of the Portuguese Judo Federation, quickly agreed. “Arnold Schwarzenegger alias Terminator would say: We will be back for sure. Hasta la vista…”, joked a visibly good-humoured EJU President. The host added: “We like to play host and are happy when everyone feels comfortable with us. By the way, we set up the best sporting result in cadet history for Portugal – with 1 x gold and 1 x silver.”
Before the start of Sunday’s mixed team competition, László Tóth found time to review the European Championships Cadets days in Odivelas.
The EJU President about…
… the European Judo Championships Cadets in Portugal: “I can only compliment the organisers and the EJU team: The Championships were a celebration for the sport of judo. For next year’s European Cadet Championships we have no less than six applicants. For all European Championships, no matter what age group, the national federations are queuing up in order to make a bid. The interest has never been so great to host EJU events. That makes us proud.”
… the 404 Championships participants: “The technical level of the fights was impressive. I watched a large number of young athletes whom I trust we will see again at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. We don’t need to worry about the future of judo. The fights were exciting, straightforward, without any tactical banter. It was really fun to watch. The atmosphere in the hall was also really good, everyone felt at ease.”
… EJU priorities: “For us as the European Judo Union, the main thing is that the athletes and coaches find ideal conditions. That was definitely the case in Odivelas. We can be satisfied. And we will be back soon…”
